How can feedback be used to support student growth without overwhelming teachers? Effective feedback can promote an environment of continuous learning and improvement. Formative assessments driven by learning targets and clear success criteria will generate opportunities to give effective feedback and foster growth. The use of feedback in the classroom has been identified as a key area of teacher and student success. Teacher evaluation systems, such as Danielson, reference the use of feedback multiple times. John Hattie’s research indicates that feedback has a significant effect size on student achievement. In this session, participants will reflect on past challenges and successes of using feedback in their classroom. The session will explore factors needed to establish a classroom culture where feedback happens naturally. Participants will explore components needed to incorporate formative assessment, with clearly identified learning targets and success criteria to focus feedback given to students. A variety of strategies and delivery methods (i.e. verbal, written, or digital) will be shared and practiced in this session. Regardless of your role in education, the key strategies for effective feedback can be applied to students and as well as educators.
